The state is home to a variety of attractions, natural features, parks, and events that draw visitors from all over the world, most notably the annual Hangout Music Festival, held on the public beaches of Gulf Shores; the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, one of the ten largest Shakespeare festivals in the world; the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, a collection of championship caliber golf courses distributed across the state; casinos such as Victoryland; amusement parks such as Alabama Kingdom; and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

Mobile has the oldest organized Mardi Gras celebration in the United States, dating back to 1703. It also hosted the first fully organized Mardi Gras parade in the United States in 1830, a tradition that still exists today. In Mobile and Baldwin counties, Mardi Gras is a state holiday.

With an attendance of 892,811 people, Mobile’s Mardi Gras parade was the state’s most popular event in 2018. The most popular attraction was the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, which drew 849,981 visitors, followed by the Birmingham Zoo, which drew 543,090. Because of its different landscapes and contrast of ecosystems, Alabama has historically been a popular location for film shooting. Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Get Out, 42, Selma, Big Fish, The Final Destination, Due Date, Need For Speed, and many other films were shot in Alabama.
